Latin America - Cultural Travel Perspective
Introduction
The interest and appreciation of Latin America has increased among seniors. A Renewed understanding of Western Hemisphere culture, societal contributions and shared history has captured the attention of this generation.
My experience as a retired Director of Information Systems, and the academic studies in Spanish texts, Indigenous codices, literature and Latin America cultural history, positions me to provide leadership, organizational structure and stimulating conversations that enrich a senior educational travel programs and complement local travel guides.
Cultural Interpreter: Codex Project
Through my study of Spanish Literature, Indigenous codices, and Latin American cultural history, I learned to interpret difficult symbolic language into simple and interesting visual storytelling. This project introduces a visual reading of El Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, Sonnet XIII through a codex, inspired by class assignments of early Maya cultures and their written language. The codex translates the poem into a system of phonetic and conceptual glyphs that represent actions, emotions and transformations. The object of this project is to interpret the sonnet through the visual language of the codices.

Cultural Interpreter: Neruda-Picasso Cubist Poster
My Neruda-Picasso Cubist poster illustrates Pablo Neruda's The Heights of Machu Picchu through a Cubist visual style.
Cubism artistic style merges naturally with Neruda’s surrealist poems, historical narratives, and political ideology.
The geometric fragmentation and multiple perspectives of Cubism give form to superimposed indigenous faces, symbolic voices, and flashes of memory. This project highlights my ability to synthesis art, literature and cultural history that enhance the guided interpretation for senior travelers.

Agencies and Application
My academic studies in Spanish literature, Indigenous codices and Latin American cultural history prepares me to assist as a Cultural Interpreter for senior travel organizations such as Smithsonian Journeys (Smithsonian Institute), National Geographic Expeditions, Road Scholar and Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT). These programs use local guides for logistics and utilize cultural experts to enhance the experience through context, storytelling and post-tour discussions.
